The Resistance of Rabbits to Tuberculosis after Vaccination with Partially Defatted Tubercle Bacilli

نویسنده

چکیده

1. A vaccine prepared from partially defatted bovine tubercle bacilli influenced favorably the survival time after inoculation with living virulent bovine tubercle bacilli. 2. Accompanying this increased resistance was a sustained lymphocytosis in the vaccinated animals. 3. The vaccine induced a transitory anemia and leucopenia. 4. A similar preparation of partially defatted human tubercle bacilli possessed the power to sensitize guinea pigs to tuberculo-protein.

On the Response of Genetically Resistant and Susceptible Rabbits to the Quantitative Inhalation of Human Type Tubercle Bacilli and the Nature of Resistance to Tuberculosis

If genetically resistant and susceptible rabbits inhale a certain number of human type tubercle bacilli, no tuberculosis in the lungs of the resistant animals is seen, as a rule several months after infection, while there is a variable and often extensive disease in the susceptible rabbits. The analogy to the presence or absence of active tuberculosis in man infected with the tubercle bacillus ...

Vaccination with Heat-killed and Formalinized Tubercle Bacilli in Experimental Tuberculosis

1. Rabbits vaccinated with tubercle bacilli killed by exposure to formalin (0.4 per cent) did not show any acquired resistance to subsequent infection with bovine tubercle bacilli, while rabbits vaccinated with tubercle bacilli which had been killed by heating to 70 degrees for 1 hour survived more than half as long again as their controls. 2. Intraperitoneal injection of either the formalin-ki...

Tuberculosis of Rabbits Induced by Droplet Nuclei Infection

At intervals from 2 to 11 weeks after normal rabbits had inhaled small numbers of virulent bovine tubercle bacilli as separated cells in droplet nuclei, groups of these animals received a single exposure to reinfection during which each animal inhaled about 20,000 separated bacilli. Normal control rabbits which inhaled this large number of bacilli died within 4 weeks thereafter. Their deaths we...

The Degree of Dispersion of the Bacillus as a Factor in Infection and Resistance in Experimental Tuberculosis

1. The skin lesions in rabbits and guinea pigs following intradermal injection of tubercle bacilli (5 strains) were greatly increased in size and severity when testicle extract was added to the inoculum. Such enhancement was followed by a more widespread and rapidly progressing disease only when virulent strains were employed. 2. Attempts to suppress the development of skin lesions resulting fr...

Infrequent appearance of drug resistant strains of tubercle bacilli in experimental animals treated with streptomycin and p-amino-salicylic acid.

The emergence of drug resistant strains of tubercle bacilli has proved to be one of the main drawbacks to the successful use of antimicrobial therapy in pulmonary tuberculosis. Resistant strain also may be obtained readily by in vitro methods. Nevertheless, it has proven difficult to study this phenomenon experimentally because of the inability to induce regularly a high degree of drug resistan...
